A headstone isn't just "stone" – depending on the material, it needs a completely different approach. What is safe for granite can permanently damage marble. Here is a short guide on how to clean the three most common materials without the risk of ruining them.

Granite – the most durable

Granite is hard and scratch-resistant, which makes it the easiest to maintain. All you need is water, a soft brush or sponge and a mild, pH-neutral detergent. A polished surface can be additionally buffed with a dedicated stone product.

• Use lukewarm water and a soft brush – avoid wire brushes.
• Use pH-neutral products, never acids or bleach.
• Polished granite can be sealed with an impregnating agent once or twice a year.

Marble – beautiful but delicate

Marble is soft and sensitive to acids. Vinegar, lemon or aggressive "hard stone" cleaners should never be used – they dull the surface and etch into the structure. The safest option is clean, lukewarm water and a soft cloth.

• Clean only with water and a soft cloth or sponge.
• Avoid acids (vinegar, lemon juice) and abrasive products.

Terrazzo – requires patience

Terrazzo (a mix of cement and aggregate) can be porous and absorbs dirt, especially after years without cleaning. Gentle scrubbing with a brush, water and a mild detergent works well. Heavily soiled terrazzo sometimes needs several passes or professional equipment.

• Wet the surface first, then scrub with a medium-stiff brush.
• Remove tougher deposits gradually, not with aggressive acids.
• Rinse thoroughly after washing – detergent residue leaves streaks.
